Medical missions in Brazil

Donation protected
In the face of all the needs of the world, we often feel helpless. As Matthew West sings in "Do Something," we're prone to asking God, "Hey, why don't you do something?"

To this, God replies, "I made you."

What God has called me to do is to go to Brazil at the end of October for a two-week stint serving on a medical missions boat with others from my local church, Belmont Christian Church.

Our trip, scheduled for Oct. 27 through Nov. 7, will start with a flight into Manaus, Brazil, where we'll board the boat and begin traveling to the first village we will be serving. The trip is under the auspices of the Central Brazil Mission, which aims to serves a number of communities in the region by sending the medical boat every three months.

The first day on the boat likely will be spent getting medical supplies ready and setting up rooms, scales, and the waiting area. When we reach a village, adults have their blood pressure checked, while adults and children alike are weighed and measured before seeing a doctor. Then, at the boat's pharmacy, everyone receives a worm pill and a gift bag. This summer, when several Belmont members went to Brazil for a similar trip, they assisted more than 900 patients ranging in age from 28 days to 81 years old.

As I prayed about the possibility of going, one of my hesitations was the cost--but when God said "go," He gave me a sense of peace that He will provide.

Donations will cover airfare and transportation, immunizations, housing and food, and medical supplies for the people we'll serve. The Belmont church family is covering a portion of the trip, while I prayerfully seek to raise the remainder from those who feel led to further the kingdom of God in the remote Brazilian communities along the Amazon River.

If you feel called to support the effort, you can donate online or by sending a check to 55 Katie Lane, Christiansburg, VA 24073. If you have any questions, I can be reached at tueljess at yahoo dot com.
