I have no health insurance. Between March of this year and today I have accrued over $125,000 in medical bills. I had major abdominal surgery in May and am facing another surgery in the months to come. My out of pocket expenses (very expensive prescritions, medical supplies and $100 for each and every office visit ) have literally wiped us out. At times I have had to choose between food or a necessary medication. Our income is limited to my husbands Social Security disability checks. Because I was in the hospital I missed a monthly budgeted payment to the electric company, which in turn gave them the right to turn off our power. They are not willing to work with me and are demanding $2761 to restore power. A customer service rep for the power company told me that power could be restored with a certificate from my doctor stating that lack of electricity could aggravate an exsisting medical condition. Due to the weeks I spent in the hospital (in isolation) I have a very contagious infection that only copious amounts of hot water can contain. Not even alchohol can kill this vicious bug. Have been on 3 courses of anti-biotics and still have it. My entire family is at risk for catching this illness, including 2 small children. I spent a week and obscene amounts of time on the phone with the doctors office and at least 6 different people at the power company trying to make this happen. All for nothing. Turns out the first customer service rep was wrong and yet not a single one after that mentioned the cerificate only keeps it on, won't turn it back on. All they told me was that service would be restored within 24 hours after they receive the certificate. When the certificate was denied I asked why I was given such erroneus information at least 7 times and was told, by a supervisor, "not all reps are trained properly". Which leaves me back at square one, in the dark. The kindness of friends and strangers is literally my only hope, have exhausted all other options.
