OHMI (the One-handed Musical Instrument)Trust needs your help.
Our objective is a simple one: we enable children and adults with physical impairments to play the instruments they want to play, when they want to play them and where they want to play them (whether at school, in the home or in a professional ensemble).
Virtually no musical instruments can be played without ten highly dextrous fingers. This denies unlimited and undifferentiated participation in musical life to those with congenital disabilities and to amputees, as well as the millions who may have been injured, suffered a stroke, developed arthritis or for whatever reason lack the full strength and control of their upper limbs. This means that millions s of people around the world are prevented from playing music because of a physical disability.
The OHMI Trust is a UK based charity that adapts and redesigns instruments so they can be played by people with wide range of physical characteristics. Take a look at the stories we have included below and at our website - Click here .
The issue is money. As our instruments have to be hand-made by experts, they can only be produced in small numbers and are therefore expensive. To make them affordable, OHMI operates a hire scheme for a small annual fee, and a bursary scheme for children and families suffering financial hardship. The initial purchase remains an ongoing financial problem for our charity.
Our plea here is for money for instruments we need to provide to disabled people - all of whom are desperate to be able to play music with their peers.
This is how far your money goes:
· £15 – The loan of a bespoke musical instrument stand for a year
· £25 – One 30-minute consultation to find the best musical instrument/ apparatus for an individual
· £30 – The conversion of a brass instrument for use by a left-handed player
· £200 – The purchase of a trumpet or cornet to be used as part of the OHMI Instrument Loan Scheme
· £350 – The purchase of a one-handed recorder to be used as part of the OHMI Instrument Loan Scheme
· £420 – One-handed Treble recorder
· £500 – Electronic Bagpipe Chanter
· £750 – The support of one OHMI Music-Maker place for a year
· £850 - One-handed Tenor recorder
· £6,000 One-handed Clarinet
· £8,000 One -handed Alto Saxophone
