Thank you for visiting our site, and we ask you to read the story of Mike and Carmen Sanderson below and graciously consider helping us in our plight to find housing after we lost it to auction, fighting cancer, and to relocate to a new job.
3 years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Lupus, and It started attacking my Central Nervous and Autoimmune systems. At the time, we had a beautiful house and everything was great, then the Lupus started forming tumors throughout my body including the brain, lungs, kidneys and liver. Eventually the one in my kidney turned cancerous, and I fought the cancer battle for 6 months, and thanks to the VA (I’m a 6 year USMC Sniper/RECON Veteran), I won the the fight. However, they have now decided that the kidney has to come out to prevent the cancer from returning, and now the Lupus is plummeting my systems again. My white cell counts are dangerously low, and to top it all off, I have recently lost my job.
When we moved to Las Vegas, we had a great job and everything was going well. Shortly after moving here, the company downsized and laid me off forcing me to take a much lower paying job with another company, and leaving us without the income to be able to stay in our house. It is now going on the auction block leaving us without the finances to move, and wondering what will happen to us, and where we’ll go to live. All of this while going through my medical procedures, and having to travel a lot to get to the VA hospital in San Diego. My Doctor insists that I stay away from stress which will weaken my already depleted immune system, which is almost impossible when you are wondering where you’ll be living tomorrow. In addition to all of this, Carmen is experiencing medical issues as well.
We have gone to Governments, Senators, Congressmen, Churches, and have been turned down by all of them with the exception of a little temporary food. The reason is that technically we still own our house, which leaves us ineligible for government assistance (please don’t get me started) Here is where we need help. Mike has a well-paying job offer in California, but has to move there to get the job, but does not have the means to make the move from Las Vegas (which would include U-Hauls, first and last with deposit, and no pay for a month). Moving to California will also enable me to be near my surgeon and Oncologist. We have never been in a spot like this and really feel helpless. Helpless enough to ask others to come to our aid. Believe me when I tell you that this is a place I would never want anyone to be.
I sincerely don’t know what else I can say to everyone other than I have humbled myself to a place I’ve never had to go. If you can find it in your heart to donate, or to even spread the word to you friends, I would be eternally grateful. At this point, all I can do is to appeal to your sense of generosity and understanding. To that, I will close and pray that my friends and strangers can change my life today.
