This is our Journey

October of 2015. I was having chest pain and difficulty swallowing. I headed to emg. When I was there they referred me to a surgeon in Lindsay.

November of 2015. I heard from the surgeon had my first visit and he ordered blood work and a scope. Had my scope early in December. He performed scope and found polyp and took a biopsy. End of December was trying to get results from surgeon. No word from surgeon. We made calls into his office. Some days was “he’s not here you have to call back” or “results aren’t in “We went for a whole month waiting even over the xmas holidays.

January 4th, 2016 on Monday heading down for a family trip to G W l. we thought we could kill two birds with one stone. I had an appointment with our family doctor in Toronto the same day. She had the results of my test. Yep they made me wait for a whole month to tell me that I had the worst cancer you can have Adenocarcinoma. Yes it was in my esophagus and stomach.

Leaving the doctors with swollen eyes from crying knowing that our lives are going to change for ever. So knowing that we had to hide our feelings from our daughters for 4 days and to make sure they had the best trip like we promised. It was one of the hardest weeks buts did we ever have a blast!

January 14, 2016 was the day we had told our daughters ages 6 and 10 at the time. Our youngest took it the hardest and my oldest one was very quiet.

January 27, 2016 our journey begins with appointments weekly, tests, blood work and 9 weeks of treatment (chemo and radiation) at PMH. With my treatments I would only be home on weekends.

May 2, 2016 1 had surgery. Surgery was about 10 hours and 8 days in the hospital.  The nurses and doctors were amazing at T G. yes my wife Janice was by my side every day. Our daughters spent time with friends and family. Thank u to all of them.

Mid-August 2016 PET scan was done at PMH waiting game again.

September 2, 2016 (Labor Day weekend) we headed back to PMH to find out the results. Sure enough the cancer is back in my liver.

Our journey continues back to appointments weekly. Blood work, treatments (chemo iv and oral chemo) everyday twice a day. I only had to go for treatment every 3rd week for iv the rest was at home for 9 weeks. My daughters were so happy that daddy didn’t have to leave again.

February 23, 2017 I was booked for surgery for my liver. Cat scan 2 weeks before surgery thinking that they were going to take 15% of my liver. They ended up taking 30 % of my liver. Because it grew so fast in between Cat scan and surgery.

Surgery was 4 hours and 3 nights in the T.G. Once again thank you to family and friends for caring for our daughters while my wife is by my side.

May 23, 2016 I have received a phone call from my oncologist the day after the scan. That’s not normal. My oncologist thought I should know the results sooner than later.

The cancer has traveled to 5 different places in my body, new cancer in Liver, Pancreas, Spleen, Peritoneum, Abdominopelvic lymph nodes. One tumor is 7 cm. Stage 4. I have started my first round in Toronto at PMH. I‘m starting my second round on June 27, 2017 at PRHC for another round then they are going to do scan.

May 23, 2017 I have changed my diet to 80 – 90 % vegan. All homemade foods, juicing with a juice cube. Eating less processed foods, less sugar and no alcohol. 1 coffee a week for a really, really special treat!

We have told our daughters that the cancer has returned. We have two strong daughters to be in this fight with us. My wife has been with me every step of the way! My oncologist asked if we wanted the statistics we said yes. Without treatment 6 months and with treatment 12 to 14. I am not done fighting this. If this chemo does nothing for me I’m going to go towards more natural type of treatment. There are many of them out there

Ever since we found out it has been an emotional roller coaster. Partly physical mostly mentally.
