“The best way to beat fear, is to let hope win” a post from Mike’s Facebook page.

Most of you don’t know him personally, but I want to tell you a little bit about him. Mike is everyone’s son. Some of the things Mike loves is reading, writing poetry and hanging out with his friends. He is my son Austin’s friend, they met in middle school and quickly became best friends. He became part of our family. They graduated high school together & they joined the Missouri National Guard together. While my son Austin is now in Afghanistan “Operation Enduring Freedom”, “one of my other sons” Mike, has been state side fighting for his life.

In June 2011 while he was away for his annual two week Missouri National Guard drill he became very sick and was transported to the hospital. This was a month before his 21st birthday. Mike was diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer. After surgery and many rounds of chemo over a period of 2 years Mike got news from the doctor that his cancer was in remission. Great news! But… in August 2014 right before his 24th birthday he wasn’t feeling well so he went to the doctor, the news was something that nobody wants to hear. His cancer was back with vengeance and had spread to his lungs & other major organs. While we desperately hope & pray for the best, we are devastated to hear the diagnosis. Mike is once again undergoing chemo, his doctors are not very optimistic and they are hoping to extend his life 6 to 9 months.

Even through all of this, he is still trying to make his life as normal as possible, he is going to school (when he is not so sick from chemo), he doesn’t talk about how bad he feels, how scared he is, or how his prognosis will affect his family & friends. He hangs out with his friends as much as possible.

Like most of us with an ongoing bucket list, Mike’s is no different. I was talking to him on the phone recently and he mentioned there were several things he would like to do in the short time he may have left. His wants are pretty simple, he would love to go to Japan, meet his favorite author Neil Gaiman and see his friend return from Afghanistan. I am sure there are other things he would love to do and we are going to try to make this happen. Although his life is rich with friends and family, his wallet is not. After 3 years of fighting, there is nobody more deserving of our help. No donation is too big or too small. All donations made through this page will go directly to Mike and I hope and pray that we can raise enough money to fulfill his life dreams.

We need your help, Mike is everyone’s son and he could be yours!
