Materialize the Mission of the Du Bois Orchestra

Mission Statement

The Du Bois Orchestra uses music to overcome social exclusion by elevating underrepresented voices in classical music through high quality musical performance, education, and community engagement.

The Du Bois Orchestra believes that our mission, with social justice and inclusion as its core principle, represents the future of classical music and successful arts organizations everywhere. We believe so fiercely in this group and its success because we know that our work and mission are vital to creating the type of environment in classical music that will thrive for years to come. Since 2015 we have been programming works by historically marginalized composers well before it became a fad to do so. We have also been programming those works alongside the classical canon, while many typically program them in separate concerts from their regular programming.
Our administrative team has been working for the past year to create goals for the Du Bois Orchestra that will both elevate the ensemble, and honor our namesake, W.E.B. Du Bois. With your support we hope to:

  • Transition to a professional ensemble by providing pay to our musicians and administration
  • Commission works by living underrepresented composers
  • Provide low cost and/or free music training for underserved communities
  • Program traditional chamber music as well as new music chamber works
  • Program less performed works and not just the “hits”

These goals will transform the Du Bois Orchestra from a community group to a professional ensemble using its platform to live out our mission. We will continue to keep our performances free of charge with the option for our audience members to donate, as we believe classical music deserves to be economically accessible and not reserved solely for the wealthy.
With your viewership and patronage, these movements forward in our growth will be possible, and you will all be a part of the new era of classical music; one built on inclusivity rather than exclusivity, public good rather than luxury, and most importantly, equality and justice on all fronts.
