On the night of Saturday, August 9, Mark McKee was in a dirt bike accident while riding with some friends near Torrington, Wyoming.
The scene of the accident was over 30 miles away from the nearest hospital. His friends, seeing that Mark was in serious condition, made the quick decision to drive him to the hospital - a decision which doctors now say saved his life. Mark had suffered a severe head injury in the crash, and was immediately flown from Torrington to nearby Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where emergency surgery was done to relieve the pressure from his brain. After surgery, the doctor's informed the family that 90% of people who sustained similar brain injuries never wake up.
Thanks to the skilled physicians and caretakers at Regional West Medical Center, and the quick reactions of his friends and emergency responders, Mark was eventually stabilized. He spent 8 days in a medically induced coma. On August 17, Mark opened his eyes. The next day his breathing tubes were finally removed and he started responding to touch.
Mark was transferred to Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital in Loveland, CO on August 22, 2014 to begin a long rehabilitation process.
The Road Ahead:
Mark is healing very well, and considering the circumstances, is in surprisingly good physical shape. However, this was a severe brain injury, and it will require a substantial amount of rehabilitation therapy to return Mark to his highest level of functioning.
Mark's insurance has covered portions of the medical expenses resulting from his injury, however, the coverage isn't nearly enough to cover all of his medical bills for his hospital stay, and it does not cover any of the expenses related to rehabilitation. In addition, his parents, Marty and Karen have had to take significant time off from work. Karen has not left Mark's side and Marty has been traveling back and forth between Torrington, WY and Loveland, CO during this time.
