Hoops of Hope for Azir

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Zach Bookbinder. I am a rising 9th grader at Harriton High School and I need your help.

On February 15, 2018, 17 year-old Azir Harris was shot and critically injured near his South Philadelphia home as he made his way to buy dinner, leaving him paralyzed. Azir still lives in Philadelphia with his family, but the two-story layout of their home makes it impossible for him to move easily, requiring his father, Troy, to carry him up and down the stairs each day.  Without his father’s efforts, Azir is forced to remain isolated in his room which he shares with his older brother.  The prospect of his father being able to continue this routine is untenable.

Azir and his family need our help.  His medical costs are prohibitive; many of the medical supplies Azir has needed have not been covered by medical insurance, as is sadly often the case with shooting victims.  Debra, Azir’s mother, was employed at a nursing home, but has since had to quit her job to stay at home to care for Azir. Troy works for Bon Appetit, which runs the dining program in Hillel’s Falk Dining Hall and they live paycheck to paycheck. They need handicap accessible housing, something that is hard to come by in the City of Brotherly Love.

I am organizing a twofold fundraiser for Azir and his family. My goal is to raise $5,000 to help offset some of his family’s expenses. The first part of my effort is raising funds at the following GoFundMe link. Please be as generous as possible as Azir’s expenses are lifelong and every dollar counts.  No donation is too small.

The second part of this fundraiser is the basketball tournament I am hosting on Saturday, September 14th (rain date September 21st) at the Narberth Borough Park (80 Windsor Avenue Narberth, PA 19072) from 10am-12pm.  In addition to a terrific tournament, we will be selling food and beverages. Come join us for a morning of fun!

Register by sending an email to [email redacted] or responding to my Instagram: @zachbookbinder. Minimum donation of $25 per player to participate in the tournament, but please be as generous as you can. Your donation to participate can be made at the GoFundMe link below. Please do not send in cash or checks.  You must register by September 2nd in order to participate.

Tell your friends and family and come join the fun! Make a difference today!

Thank you so much for supporting me and Azir.
