Cristo Rey Medical Clinic in Juarez

During a recent border immersion trip to ElPaso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico we became aware of a woman by the name of Dr. San Juana Bruce Mendoza and her clinic, the Cristo Rey Medical/Dental Clinic. Dr Mendoza has committed 20 years of her life serving individuals in Anapra, one of the poorest areas of Juarez, Mexico. It exists over the border but in the shadows of the luxury homes in El Paso. Dr. Mendoza believes that "Access to health care is a human right and should not be sold." Therefore, she never denies service to any of the 35,000 families in her clinic area.
In this dangerous area Dr. Mendoza takes great personal risk and volunteers her time at the clinic 5 days a week. Given the level of crime, she maintains a spartan facility charging only a nominal fee out of respect for the institution and the dignity of the people (each visit is less than $2). This leaves little money for equipment and salaries.
According to Dr. Mendoza, one piece of equipment, a bladder scanner, is desperately needed due to the high incidence of diabetes and the importance of detecting early symptoms of urinary retention.
We would like to help Dr. Mendoza by purchasing this equipment for her. We have located a refurbished bladder scanner for $2,500 through a distributor that works with one of our local hospitals. This piece of equipment costs approximately $7,000 new.
Our campaign goal is $3,000 to cover cost of equipment plus shipping and taxes; any extra money collected will be sent to Dr. Mendoza to help cover basic expenses.
