Drew Children Support Fund

In August of 2017, I started as a teacher's aide the 2's and 3's room of a child care center that serves homeless and low income families in the greater Wilmington area. I fell in love with a 2 year old boy named Cheefh. He has a gentle spirit and happy smile. This little boy was one of four of the Drew family at the center. At the time, the Drew family was experiencing homelessness. By the end of October 2017, they moved into an apartment one block away from mine.

Once the Drew’s had moved into their apartment I asked if I could stop by for a visit. I took a plate of cookies and a note welcoming them to the neighborhood and congratulating them on their new home. I clearly remember Mrs. Drew telling me with tears in her eyes and her hands squeezing both of mine, that I was their first guest in their own home.

I started to visit more often, listening and loving them as best as I knew how. We worked together, with my church, to furnish the house with many of the basics. We spent time together celebrating their children’s birthdays with cupcakes and candles and song. I grew to love this family more and more.

Taralyn is 6 years old and in kindergarten. Tylier is 5 years old, Cheefh turned 3 in February and Cylance is 1.

In December, the Drew’s shared with me that they were expecting a baby girl! Last week on Tuesday March 20th, I received very sad news that Mrs. Drew went into labor and both she and their unborn baby girl passed away from complications.

My heart hurts so much for this family. Their children may not fully understand that their mother has passed, and will never get the chance to truly know their mom, but they definitely know they were loved immensely. Despite the Drew family’s struggles with homelessness and poverty, they maintained a positive attitude of hopefulness. Their love and commitment to each other was obvious.

I am hoping to raise money to support the Drew family through this very difficult time. Mr. Drew is currently planning funeral services for his wife and unborn daughter. My goal is to raise $5,000 to make sure these lives are honored and hopefully help with basic living expenses in the near future as Mr. Drew grieves, works, and continues to care for his 4 children.
