Gabriela is a happy, fun, beautiful and gracious young woman. She is also a fighter, and has pursued her dreams with a passion.
She was born in Uruguay with big dreams to graduate from an American University. A few years ago she was forced to put that on hold as she fought for her life - a major car accident. After multiple surgeries and years of slow and painful physical therapy she regained her independence. Sometimes the pain is still excruciating, but it has not broken her spirit.
She made her way to the US and currently resides in Sandy, Utah where she attends the Lumos Language School. English will be her third language! She often "aces" her exams - a phrase we had to teach her - and is at the top of her class. When her teacher leaves the room he will sometimes joke that Gabriela will be taking over in his absence. We are confident that in a few weeks she will "ace" her English exam (TOFL) and qualify herself for admittance at the University.
Only one hurdle remains - one she cannot overcome on her own. Her student visa restricts her from working outside of the University where she attends. The University requires that she have $7000 set aside before they will admit her. She would love to earn the money, but cannot get a job until she already has the money - a catch 22. So for now the only way forward is to rely on the help of others - something she does reluctantly.
