Dream Rally

Donation protected
Help us fund The Dream Rally on April 7, 2018, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Faith in the Valley and the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Justice Committee are sponsoring the Rally. We’re asking you to become a sponsor by making a donation on this GoFundMe page to cover the costs of the event. We need about $1,200 just to rent Yokuts Park for the morning and we need a stage, programs, flyers, etc. The fees for the park are due no later than March 16, 2018, so please don't wait too long.

We’ll have food vendors, music and speakers. While the list of speakers hasn’t been finalized, it will include Coach Rod Barnes (if he’s available), Pastor Toure’ Tyler (Cross Christian Church), Dr. Tim Vivian (Cal State Religious Studies) Josth Stenner (Faith in the Valley), and others.  Danny Morrison of the Beat (103.9) will be the MC/DJ. We’ll also have live music..

What do we need the money for? The fees for using Yokuts Park are approximately $1,200. That’s our main expense, although we estimate that we’ll need another $800-1,000.00 for incidentals such as programs, flyers, buttons, and so on.

What do you get in return for your contribution? Our eternal gratitude, listing as a sponsor on the program, and free admission (of course, admission is free for everyone, so invite all you friends and family to come too).

The theme of the Dream Rally is “What’s happened to Dr. King’s dream in the last 50 years?” We chose April 7 (rather than April 4, which is the anniversary of his assassination) because it’s a Saturday, so everyone can come. Then we discovered that April 7, 1968, was declared as a national day of mourning by President Johnson, and while we want to celebrate Dr. King’s life, rather than mourning his death, it seems like a doubly appropriate date for the Dream Rally.

Although you may not remember Dr. King or his assassination, his influence walks with us and his concerns for civil and economic rights live with us today. While progress has been made in many areas, the need in others—such as poverty, religious and racial discrimination and economic equality—remains great. In commemorating this anniversary, and celebrating the life of one of the most influential leaders of our time, we want to not only keep his dreams (yes, he had more than one) alive, but move them forward and use them to combat today’s poverty, discrimination and violence.
