Hello everyone, my name is Drake and I am a 1.5 year old Lab, Shar Pei mix puppy in need of two orthopedic surgeries estimated to cost $8000.00. Here is my story....
At 4 weeks old my mom saved me. I was found in a local cemetery all alone, covered in fleas and dirt. But, she didn't mind. When she laid eyes on me it was love at first sight. She took me home, cleaned me up and vowed to give me the life I deserved no matter what.
Mom is single and is a teacher by profession. Extra money is a rarity around our house but when she has some, it always gets spent on me. She even tutors during the school year and works in the summer to make sure I have the best money can buy. Last summer she even threw me a birthday party! Check me out!
My mom and I are best buds, and we do everything together!!! She loves to take me for runs, trips to the park, and pretty much anywhere else that will allow pets. I had even started training to become a therapy dog for at risk students. My mom knows I have a lot of love to give and she wanted me to be able to share that with others.
My life was pretty much perfect up until three weeks ago when I ruptured the CCL tendon in my left hind leg. Mom took me to the doctor immediately (thank goodness because that thing hurt!!!). The doctor scheduled a surgery for March 5th and told my mom no off leash play for the next three months (ugh...thanks doc!).
So of course my mom did just as he had prescribed. No matter how much I whined at the back door she wouldn't let me out unsupervised and without a leash. I was starting to feel O.K. until last Saturday.
Mom took me out midafternoon to go potty. While I was outside I saw another dog passing by. I turned, and slipped on a patch of ice (we live in Michigan and the winters here are awful), rupturing my right hind CCL tendon. I yelped and fell to the ground. Mommy was crying, she picked me up and rushed me into the house. She called our veterinarian and they recommended she take me to MSU Veterinary Hospital an hour away. They said the case was too severe now and I would need an Orthopedic Surgeon.
Today, we went for my follow up appointment where my mom was told that both of my legs will require surgery at a cost of $8000.00 with a recovery time of 4-6 months.
As I said before, my mom loves me and would do anything to make sure I have the best quality of life possible. So, she agreed to the doctor's plan of action and I am scheduled to have my first surgery this week. However, what my mom is not sure of is how she will fund this cost.
So, my hope is that by telling my story here I can help elevate some of that burden from my mom. My mom is so worried about me and my recovery, I don't want her to be worried about this too. If you can help support me and my medical bills in any way possible, I would be so grateful and I know my mom would be too. I hope that I can raise enough money to help give my mom a little of what she has given me, and that is the best quality of life possible.
