Philip Anzolut Stansly (5/5/1944 -- 9/12/2018)
Thank you for your help in remembering Phil by donating into his memorial and student scholarship fund. All the proceeds will first go to the making of a bronze memorial plaque to display his many years of work and dedication for UF and all the other agricultural and research communities in the United States and around the world. This will be displayed at the UF Entomology and Nematology Department in Gainesville, Florida . Additional funds will go to the creation of a scholarship for graduate students that are finding innovative yet practical ways to manage pest and diseases in Florida's fruit and vegetable industry. The amount of donations will determine how much available funding will be received by the students. This will start by giving away small travel grants to help students spread their ideas in conferences or community events. However, this could also lead to assisting full time graduate students who are dedicated to the cause, but are not always following the status quo and needs help to blaze their own trails. The sky's the limit and even that isn't really off limits!
Also, you could donate some of your time by contributing to Phil's Wikipedia page (under construction). There are many great articles of Phil including his infamous 'Psyllid Slayer ' nick name and also his parting shots at the 2018 Citrus Expo.

The SWFREC team and UF/IFAS family have lost a highly respected and loyal faculty member with the passing of our friend Dr. Phil Stansly. Phil was an outstanding mentor of graduate students, post docs and junior faculty. Those who have benefited from his guidance over many years are now serving all over the world and carry forward his legacy. Dr. Stansly was not bashful when the record needed to be “set straight “. He was well known for his critical thinking which served us well during many years as a SWFREC faculty member.
Phil was truly a highly experienced and knowledgeable applied entomologist who had the ability to think the way growers think. He had a thorough understanding of pest management which he used effectively to solve production problems. As a valued senior faculty member, he leaves a real big void at SWFREC.
Rest In Peace old friend!

Your Father was an outstanding scientist -- several people in our Department (Food and Resource Economics) who had a chance to work with him commented last week about how much he contributed to science and to Florida agriculture and how good he was to work with. But beyond that he was a great person. I so enjoyed getting to know him on our trip to Cuba a few years ago. And he made important contributions to the workshop that we put on and to meetings we had down there.

Phil was one of my favorite people in IFAS. We had some great conversations over the last two years as we worked on a manuscript together. Last time I saw him was in June. Being an entomologist was in the truest sense of the word a profession for him. His enthusiasm was catching.

"While his (Stansly’s) work on psyllids is vital, the agricultural community and the environment have (also) benefitted from his work on control of exotics such as tropical soda apple and air potatoes,” says Gulf grower Hugh English. “Phil’s interest and enthusiasm in his work on a daily basis is a model to follow.”

“Phil is very well respected by our growers,” says multi-county citrus Extension agent Mongi Zekri, who serves the Gulf. “Because of his knowledge, I often invite him to visit growers with me to diagnose problems in citrus groves. Phil is not only an expert in citrus entomology, but he is also a good horticulturist.”

SWFREC Director Calvin Arnold describes Stansly as “an excellent entomologist who really understands pest management in respect to farming operations. He is a problem solver!”

Many refer to Stansly as “hard working,” including Jawwad Qureshi, a UF entomologist in Fort Pierce who worked several years with Stansly in Immokalee. “His work on nutritionals, insecticides and biological control has provided growers with several options of protecting citrus and improving their productivity,” Qureshi says.

“Phil is very focused on conducting his research to help the growers,” adds retired UF entomologist Bob Rouse, who worked with Stansly for 25 years in Immokalee. “His results have been ready for growers to apply immediately and have saved them thousands of dollars.”

Rouse ends his accolades on a light note: “Phil is known for being cheap and not spending money unless he has to. We have yielded to his insistence on a $3 lunch many times just so he would go with us as a group.”

I felt heartfelt pain to hear this sad news about news of my dearest mentor and friend! Yongmei ang I cried and cried! We recalled all the time when we were there - LaBelle and Immokalee. We vividly recall the first time when we arrived LaBelle, and the four years with him and the Stansly family. Without him, I would not have had the achievements this day. I will miss him, and will never forget him in my life!
Please pass my deepest sympathy to you and the family. I will try to visit you when I visit the States next time.

Dear Friends,
We have received information about the death of our colleague and friend Dr Philip Stansly last Wednesday. It is a very sad news, Philip was a very collaborative person with us, he went several times in Cuba , participated in different scientific meetings and also has received some of us in the Inmokalee station.He always helped us and support our efforts in the improving of the relationships between cuban and USA scientifics.

Its late and I have just read Richards post of Stanslys death, what a loss , he was an entomologist with strong connection to citrus , whenever I met him I was always impressed by his way of listening , to concerns and thoughts of others. Phil was an excellent example of modesty and of humanity , we exchanged letters rarely but he was one of the Floridian people that I always felt fortunate to know, God bless his memory, will miss immensely

Phil and I had nicknames for each other and others that were close associations. With Phil’s passing, I will retire forever all our reverent (and irreverent) nomenclature in his honor and loving memory. Phil was a very rare and special person and I know he is now in world even more special. Rest in peace, my friend.

Dr. Phil Stansly, appropriately nicknamed the “psyllid slayer”, passed away yesterday after a brief battle with cancer. He was 74. Dr. Stansly, as many of you would know, was an accomplished entomologist at UF, working at the SWFREC since 1989. To many of us he was more familiar as Ted Stansly’s dad. Ted is a doctorate student at NFREC with Dr. David Wright. Dr. Stansly’s contributions to his field through research and service to his clientele will be missed, and fondly remembered.
