Dr. Patricia Juarez-Carrillo Memorial Fund
This Memorial Fund was created on behalf of Dr. Patricia Juarez-Carrillo's family to raise funds to support scholarships, promotra development and environmental justice work.
Dr. Juárez was the coordinator of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) . She worked for the Center for Environmental Resource Management for over 17 years and received the “Texas Environmental Excellence Award” in 2007 for the “Healthy Homes” project. She was a consultant for government and non-government organizations, co-authored a book chapter, facilitated trainings, and has drafted numerous educational materials for the public. She received the 2018 Sophe Paper of the Year Award.
Dr. Juarez was a native of the US-Mexico border region raised in Ciudad Juarez and lived in El Paso, TX. She held a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from UTEP focusing on environmental health issues and a Master of Public Health with emphasis in community health form the University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health in El Paso.
She worked as project coordinator at the Center for Environmental Resource Management at UTEP for over 13 years implementing numerous environmental health and justice interventions along the US-Mexico border. She worked for Project Concern International as the Monitoring and Evaluation coordinator and a consultant for Migrant Clinicians Network, Border Environment Cooperation Commission, and the NIOSH/CDC.
Dr. Juarez-Carrillo coauthored numerous educational materials and training curriculums related to environmental health and justice intended for Spanish-speaking communities living in the border. She also co-authored a chapter with Dr. Sara Grineski of the Sociology & Anthropology Department titled “Environmental Injustices in the US-Mexico border region” for the book “Social Justice in the US-Mexico Border Region” offering an overview of environmental injustices and recommendations to address potential injustices in the border.
Dr. Juárez-Carrillo served as co-leader of the Environmental Education Task Force of the U.S.-Mexico Border 2020 Program in the New Mexico-Texas-Chihuahua area and she was an editorial member of the Health Promotion Practice Journal.
She taught an environmental justice online course within the Chicano Studies Program for undergraduate students and gave presentations for other courses in social work and public health.
She was a tireless advocate for human rights, environmental justice and dedicated her life to service learning.
She survived by her husband, three children and grandchildren.
