Surgery/Med Expenses for Mateo

Donation protected
There's no other bigger blessing in life than a child! <3 As a parent, there's nothing worse than seeing your child not feeling well, sick, unable to do something that he/she should be able to. You would do anything to make it better, if given the choice take sickness, pain, discomfort upon yourself. That's how we feel for our Mateo. Mateo is 12 years old and was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrpophy at the age of 9. The particular type of disorder is Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). You wouldn't be able to tell this amazing boy is fighting any kind of disorder by being around him and his awesome personality. He's full of sunshine, laughs and love! He'd do anything to bring a smile to someone's face; however the symptoms are evident. He has trouble walking, balancing himself, falls often, get tired within short distances and is limited in strength. His disorder is also slowly progressing making it even more difficult for him to perform normal daily functions. We made this benefit to help us fund his surgery September 24, 2014. We were informed yesterday that we will be responsible for a portion of the procedure. Please help us to reach our goal of $5000 which will be used for the surgery, medical supplies and we are hoping to start generating funds for a wheel chair. Thank you in advance for all of your help. God Bless each and everyone one of you and thanks again for your prayers, support and contrubutions. We love you!!

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a neurological disorder named after the three physicians who first described it in 1886 — Jean-Martin Charcot and Pierre Marie of France, and Howard Henry Tooth of the United Kingdom. CMT causes damage to the peripheral nerves, which carry signals from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles, and relay sensations, such as pain and touch, to the brain and spinal cord from the rest of the body. There are a number of types of CMT. CMT causes muscle weakness and atrophy, and some loss of sensation in the feet, the lower legs, the hands and the forearms. It also often causes contractures (stiffened joints due to abnormal tightening of muscles and associated tissues), and sometimes, curvature of the spine (scoliosis). At the severe end of the CMT spectrum, the disease can affect nerves other than those that go to and from the extremities. If the nerves that go to and from the diaphragm or intercostal (between the ribs) muscles are affected, respiratory impairment can result. CMT is caused by defects in the genes for proteins that affect axons — fibers that carry electrical signals between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body — or in the genes for proteins that affect myelin, a coating on axons that insulates and nourishes them. Depending on the type of CMT, onset can be from birth to adulthood, and progression is generally slow. CMT usually isn't life-threatening, and it almost never affects the brain.
