Doulas for a Healthier Future

Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism, and implicit bias. Social determinants of health have historically prevented many people from racial and ethnic minority groups from having fair opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health.

One of the most effective tools for any birthing person is having a doula support them throughout the birth process. A doula is a trained, non-clinical, professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a pregnant person before, during, and after childbirth. Studies have shown that this type of personalized and continuous support improves not only the birth experience and the physical and psychological outcomes for a parent and baby, but also has a positive impact on the well-being of a whole family. A Cochrane review found that there are no downsides or adverse effects of doula support.

To support healthy outcomes for parents, especially Black birthing people, in the United States, I am embarking on a journey to be trained as a full-spectrum doula. I have completed training to become a postpartum doula and I am working on birth doula training. My mission is to provide birth support to everyone that I can assist.
