Growing up in Maine, Lynda Doughty was always fascinated by the marine wildlife that inhabited the state’s coastline. She became a marine biologist and dedicated her life to caring for marine animals in need. So, when state and government funding vanished and local organizations working to protect these animals closed their doors, she dove in to fill the gap in care. Since 2011, her organization, Marine Mammals of Maine, has provided response efforts, assistance, and medical care for more than 3,000 marine animals.
