On December 14, 2017 a CARE Ambulance crew, Roger D. (Doug) Jones and William Austin, were responding to an emergency, an unresponsive patient in Dallas County, Alabama. During the response they were struck head on by a tractor trailer that had crossed the center line and was now traveling in their lane. This caused a horrific crash that caused severe injuries to William and Roger. Both of them were airlifted from the scene and flown to a trauma center for the treatment of their injuries.
Doug was the front seat passenger in this devastating crash. He was able to self-extricate and maneuvered around the truck to his partner to check on him. They maintained voice contact until responders arrived to begin cutting his partner from the wreckage. Through all of this Doug maintained his paramedic training and thought first of his partner. He had to check on William.
Doug sustained significant injuries. Doug was released from the hospital after a few days and is now home recovering. His healing process will be long. These injuries will take time to heal.
Doug is a hard working paramedic that has been employed by CARE Ambulance since October 2008. He works many hours and is always happy to help when he can. He deployed to Miami, Florida in October in response to Hurricane Irma. There, he and other CARE medics assisted in the evacuation of many people as the storm approached. This help was greatly appreciated by our sister company, American Ambulance.
The road through therapy and recovery will be painful and expensive. Many unseen expenses will arise. There is no way to predict when Doug will be able to return to work. We, as his EMS family, want to make sure that this devastating injury does not cause any financial hardship for Doug or his family. Please take this opportunity to contribute to this cause. Doug will need emotional and financial support to fully recover from this incident.
