Double Amputee Wants to Drive Again

Double Amputee Wants to Drive Again but Needs Help Paying for Hand Controls

My husband Marvin has been an insulin-dependent diabetic for twenty years.  He lost his left leg in August 2008 after trying all avenues to save it.  In April 2015, while helping a downhearted friend, Marvin fell getting into the van and broke his right ankle.  In May 2015, he ended up in the hospital with congestive heart failure and kidney failure.  He started dialysis in July 2015 and still has occasional complications with that.  After several steps to help with the healing of his ankle, Marvin ended up having his right leg amputated in November 2015.

I still work full time, to help support the household, so it has really been difficult to get Marvin rides to and from dialysis 3 days a week and to various doctor’s appointments. It is also very costly.  He is on disability, but Medicare does not pay for everything.  My husband still has co-pays, hospital bills, dialysis bills, prosthesis bills and prescription costs.

Marvin has graduated from the wheelchair to the walker, and he is now working on getting his license to drive a vehicle equipped with hand controls.  He took the training and got the initial certification.

Marvin is a former tractor trailer driver and would love to drive himself where he needs to go.  However, he is a humble man, does not believe in self-pity and would never ask for help.  I know there are people out there who are in worse shape than Marvin is, but getting his independence back would mean so much to him as a husband and a provider.

I know times are hard for everyone, so I certainly understand if you are unable to donate.  For those of you who are financially able and can find it in your heart to do so, please know that we are truly grateful for your help.
