Dorothy Osborn Stroke Recovery

As of November 2020, you have contributed more than $13,000 for Dorothy’s stroke recovery. We are all profoundly grateful for this tremendous outpouring of generosity from her friends and loved ones. The money raised so far has been used for improvements around Dorothy’s home, including leveling the driveway for construction of an accessibility ramp, installing grab bars, and building a walk-in shower on the first floor. Funds have also gone toward mobility equipment, bedding, medical supplies, food, comfort items, and legal fees to secure Dorothy’s power of attorney.

In addition, donors in the Orcas community have furnished a hospital bed, and materials and labor for the ramp from her driveway to the front door. Many friends have also provided labor and other non-monetary donations. We deeply appreciate this spirit of giving on her behalf.

Since her stroke, Dorothy has worked hard, making great strides with speaking and regaining her mobility. She is thrilled to have progressed in her recovery enough to come home to Eastsound. It has been a gift of grace to return and find her house more comfortable and easier to navigate.

While it is exciting for Dorothy to be home, some unforeseen issues and expenses have arisen. Due to limitations of her health insurance, she will have to pay out of pocket for physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and nursing services until the end of January. It may also be necessary for Dorothy to pay for additional caregiving not funded by DSHS. It is critical for her to receive these services at home so she can continue her progress toward regaining vital skills such as bathing and dressing herself.

Dorothy’s expenses for therapy, nursing, and caregiving for the next six months are estimated at $12,000. Please consider making another donation to help support Dorothy in her ongoing stroke recovery.
