Dooloomai; Tents & Troopy

WE NEED YOUR HELP

To raise funds for the only Tasmanian not-for-profit who run Bush Adventure Therapy camps for young people and the Tasmanian community  ‍ ‍

Dooloomai (which means ‘thunder in the hills’) has been around for 25 years supporting young people and the Tasmanian community. We are the last remaining not-for-profit that provides Bush Adventure Therapy camps to support our young people and the community.

Over 25 years we have run over 200 camps for 2,500 participants and worked with organisations like Diabetes Tas, EdZone (alternative Tasmanian school), Sacred Heart, MacKillop College, Scotch Oakburn, Burnie & Wynard High Schools and Young People in out-of-home care.

We provide challenging and meaningful experiences for participants by combining the natural environment, a simple lifestyle and Bush Adventure Therapy techniques. We create unique opportunities for self-reflection, personal motivation and positive change. We CHANGE people’s lives and they in turn give back to our community.

We DO NOT rely on Government funding which is one of the reasons we are still going strong after 25 years.

WHAT WE NEED
Troopy
Three years ago, our beloved Troopy was stolen. With limited funds, we found the best replacement that we could and it’s served us well and holds dear memories for countless participants. Cramped in the back, bumping along dirt tracks, enthusiastic sing alongs... It's chugged along with our monster kayak trailer wearing it down and has faithfully carried us from A to B with increasing groaning and moaning but it needs to be retired. It’s served us as a temporary fix but it’s reached the end of it’s life and now we desperately need a consistent, reliable vehicle. $50,000 is needed to purchase a quality Troopy. Without a vehicle, we can't get people out into the mountains.

Tents
In January Dooloomai is running a trip into the Central Plateau in partnership with Diabetes Tas. We're taking a bunch of adventurous young adults living with chronic illness into the mountains on a challenging bushwalk. The Central Plateau can be hit with all sorts of weather at all times of year. To ensure the safety of our group we need some new tents, ones that will keep us warm and dry without adding 5kg to our pack weights. We're looking to purchase 6x One Planet Wurley 2 tents, which are $559 each ($3,354 in total).

Website
If you go to our website (https://www.dooloomai.org/) you'll notice that it's pretty daggy, we really have to do some rebranding. We'll be redesigning our website and logo which also requires funds. Alternatively, if you're a graphic or website designer who can spare some time to help us out with these things, send us an email on [email redacted]

We know that this is a huge amount to ask for, but we also know how many people benefit from our programs and believe strongly that this is a cause worth fighting for.

An increased sense of hope.

There is something magic about being in nature that is intangible and difficult to describe in a list; something about sitting in the mud, drinking hot cups of tea from dirty mugs, waking up to bird calls and fresh air, falling onto your mat exhausted and satisfied, giggling with tent mates, sitting beneath trees and watching the leaves dance; that we all know but can't quite place. We are more present. More connected.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
There is an increasing awareness around the benefits of Bush Adventure Therapy and a plethora of new research on exactly how and why it works. In the coming years, we're going to see a huge increase in demand for it; especially in Tasmania, as the government and other services catch up with what we've all known for years- it really works.

Our origin dates back to Project Harn, one of the most successful and longest standing Bush Adventure Therapy programs in Australian history. Throughout the past thirty years, Bush Adventure Therapy (BAT) in Tasmania has taken on many different shapes and forms. Our team has been there through it all and has decades of experience and knowledge. There is already so much demand for programs that we have been unable to run with our limited resources. Help us get our equipment and branding up to scratch so we can be there when we're called on. Be a part of the movement.
