Donnie Smith’s healing & recovery

Donald (Donnie) Smith was injured Thursday night at Mitchell field. He plays on a men’s softball league and is the pitcher for Team Acropolis.

He took a line drive to the face while pitching and the softball shattered his skull. He was hit in the front temporal/parietal region and suffered a severe brain bleed and trauma to the region of his brain affecting speech, concentration, problem solving, planning and personality. He was in a medically induced coma for 2 days and is now conscious but it has definitely affected his ability to concentrate and form sentences. He has a quarter of his skull missing until the swelling on his brain goes back to normal. This will take several months before they can repair his skull and he will have to wear helmet to protect his head. We still do not know the full extent of his brain injuries. He is going to be in the hospital for quite sometime with months of recovery after that.

Donnie is self employed in the construction industry and doesn’t have insurance. He is not going to be able to go back to work for a long time if at.
