Donnell Mills Kidney Fund

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Donnell, I’ve worked my entire adult life and always provided for myself and my family. But my health began to fail in 2003. I began having migraine headaches and after several tests, it was determined that I was suffering from kidney disease. My kidney was functioning at only 25%, which meant I was in renal failure. I kept up with all of my doctor’s appointments and followed all instructions. However by 2004 it was at just 10%, which meant I had to begin dialysis treatments and I was added to the kidney transplant list.

In 2009, after five years of dialysis, I finally received the call I’d been praying for—there was a kidney waiting for me at Duke University Hospital! The transplant procedure itself was successful. Unfortunately, my body began to reject the kidney after three years and by 2013, I was once again receiving dialysis and have been for the last four years. I do exactly as the doctors and dialysis center instruct me to in hopes that my name will be added to the transplant list, that a kidney will become available and that a second procedure will be completely successful and without rejection.

What you may not know is that many people receive a transplant and then cannot afford the necessary maintenance medications. So, beyond my failing physical condition, I must also qualify financially. In order to be added to the list, I must raise at least $5,000 to prove that I can afford the post-transplant medications. I am grateful for any assistance you can provide to help me to my financial goal and ultimately a second and successful transplant.

My poor health and the need for dialysis three days a week puts countless limitations on my ability to participate in normal family activities and outings. Dealing with my health issues continues to be a long, arduous, physical and emotional journey for me and my family; especially for my wife, Sandy, who has been by my side for the duration. I love her without question, and having a healthy body will allow me to take her on a long overdue and much-needed vacation. We want to see the world! Live your life to the fullest and take care of your health now!

In addition to financial assistance, I am also making a plea for you to become an organ donor. You could be saving the life of a stranger or that of a friend or loved one. There are so many people that prefer not to ask for help, but if it is the difference between saving a life or not, count me in. Can I count on you? Maintenance medications are expensive and $5,000 is the amount needed to add me to the transplant list.

Whatever any of you can do is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
