Mama Donna's Back Surgery Fund

Donation protected
The superwoman that is my mother has been caring for children and families as a pediatric nurse and midwife for 42 years (in The Bahamas, Scotland, and Miami, among other places.)

Unfortunately, the long hours on her feet have taken a disastrous toll on her body. She has already endured two knee replacement surgeries and painful physical therapy to get back on her feet.

My mother is now in need of surgery to correct a condition known as Dynamic Spondylolisthesis; Lumbar discs rupture and Herniation, which causes disc degeneration, atrophy, and nerve pain that radiates down her spine, thighs and legs. She has had inflammation in her spinal bones, and three herniated discs for 10+ years. This past November, one of the discs ruptured. Medication, spinal steroid injections and physical therapy have ceased to keep the pain at bay. At times the pain is so excruciating it affects her ability to work and live a normal life, and she's had several nasty falls from spine instability.

Her doctor has urged that she have surgery at the end of September, as waiting any longer could result in further degeneration, but the remaining cost for the surgery (after insurance) is a whopping $20,000.

My family and I are doing the best we can to pool our funds and scrounge up that amount as best as we can before the surgery. I know an amount of that size is nearly impossible to put together in such a short amount of time, but we're hoping to secure a down payment for the procedure and pay the rest in installments over the next few years.

My mom has supported and cared for me, my family, and countless other children and their families her entire life. She has opened her home, her kitchen and her heart to anyone who has ever needed or asked for it, all while keeping a roof over my head, working full-time, and going back to school get a Bachelor's in Nursing and Master's degree in Nursing Education.

I humbly ask for any assistance you can spare, no matter how small. Even though her body is rebelling against her, all my mother wants to do is get back on her feet and get back to work doing what she loves best. We appreciate anything you can find in your heart to give.
