On the 1st January 2013, Ashleigh Smith will spend three weeks volunteering on the International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) Music program in Kenya. IVHQ is a New Zealand based NGO that provides safe, affordable volunteering opportunities abroad. The music education program, set up by past IVHQ volunteers in Kenya, is designed to give the children of the slum a chance to let their voices and songs be heard. Music is their passage to a better life, if even that means that this better life lasts for only a few minutes of song. Volunteers will provide students a basic understanding of musical theory (note reading, etc.) as well as instrument and vocal training. Current classes include guitar, piano, introduction to music, and traditional music lessons where students share and learn from each other cultural and tribal songs.

In order to participate on this program, Ashleigh has to pay fees of US$470, which will cover her accommodation, meals, orientation, program placement, volunteer support services, placement supervision and administration costs of the program. Furthermore, Ashleigh will have extra costs such airfares to Kenya, in country travel and vaccinations. Finally, many volunteers also find their impact is even more profound if they take some fundraised/donated money to invest in projects being undertaken by the local NGOs and communities with whom they are working.
