Lynn began this journey in April 2022 when she started experiencing a different kind of pain in the back of her head. It was unlike her usual headaches, but she pushed through it, hoping it would go away. As time went on, the pain became more frequent. It wasn't until around October that she finally mentioned it to Roby. In December, at his urging, she went to see their family doctor, Dr. Burson, who ordered an MRI. The results revealed a blockage, and Lynn was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation. Dr. Burson referred her to a neurosurgeon in the area, Dr. Gentry.

When Lynn met with Dr. Gentry, he expressed surprise that she was able to walk into his office on her own. With this large in size of Chiari most would require assistance walking. He was eager to operate on such a challenging case and ordered more tests, including 9 additional MRIs, CSF flow studies, and CT scans.

After reviewing all the results, Dr. Gentry determined that the surgery was too risky due to the size of her Chiari Malformation (19mm) and the abnormal positioning of the main artery. Lynn was then referred to UTSouthwestern and had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Aoun in Dallas over the summer. Dr. Aoun reviewed all of her tests and discussed the surgery with Lynn, Roby, and her boys. He is confident that he can successfully remove part of her skull and replace it with a bovine patch to alleviate the pressure, pain, and restore CSF flow.

Lynn and her family are grateful for the care and expertise of Dr. Aoun and his team, and are hopeful that this surgery will finally bring relief from the constant pain and discomfort that she has been experiencing. It has been a long and difficult journey, but the Spurlin Family has expressed how thankful they are for the support of all of their family and friends.

Lynn’s surgery is scheduled for May 16th. They will make several trips for other appointments during this difficult season. The Spurlin family has only asked for prayers at this time, however if you feel led to help monetarily this will help with travel and medical expenses.
