As many of you know, my dad has been diagnosed with a type of blood cancer called MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome). The condition occurs when blood-forming cells in the bone marrow are damaged leading to low numbers of red and white blood cells and platelets.
On Thursday, June 15, he starts his first round of treatments in Seattle. He will need to commute from Poulsbo to Seattle for 8 days. This means he will need to wake up early to catch the Bainbridge Ferry to Seattle and fight with the morning and afternoon traffic after receiving a full day of treatment. The easiest solution is for him to stay in a hotel nearby the clinic for his 8 day stretch of treatment. He will have a few weeks off and then have another round of treatments lasting 8 days for the next 6 months. Summer rates are averaging $300+ per night and will cost around $1800-$2000 per month.
For those who have been close to my dad, you know that he has always given his heart and soul to you. My dad would be the first one to offer his assistance to a person he just met and would go above and beyond to try to make things easier for them. Everywhere he goes, he meets a new friend and they remain a friend to him for life.
He is now entering into this battle and needs our help more than ever. I know it is hard times out there and not everyone can afford to donate a lot of money to help. My dad has a huge support network and any amount that can be contributed during this journey will certainly help him. We have all faced similar situations where we want to help as much as we can. We can not make the disease go away but we can show our support in helping him to worry less about the monetary needs so he can focus on his health.
