My mom, Yesenia, has been battling her own body for many years now. In 2014, my mom found out she was in renal failure and needed a kidney transplant. While she had a willing donor and a viable match, in Mexico healthcare standards, it took almost 4 years for her transplant. She was able to live a normal life until the beginning of 2024, where we learned her body was rejecting the transplant and would need to go on dialysis again and on a transplant list.

While finding a match has not been possible, the Mexican healthcare system has also not been kind. For background, Mexico has a universal healthcare system which makes care "free" but the wait-list long. A lot of medical care through the system is emergency-related and leaves little resources for chronic illnesses. Because of this, it took my mom more than a year to get a doctor's appointment to be "diagnosed" with renal failure again. And when that appointment came, the doctor canceled and rescheduled for 8 months later.

So since early 2024, my mom, my siblings, family, and friends have paid out of pocket for every medicine, medical test, surgery, and dialysis treatment at doctors out of the healthcare system. Recently, my mom has had some loss in mobility, caused by her renal failure, that has stopped her from continuing to work. On top of the ongoing medical care necessary for dialysis treatment, there is added cost for physical therapy to regain mobility. Dialysis sessions alone cost more than $1000 US dollars a month and does not include all the medication and ongoing testing. I'm hoping to raise some funds and reduce the financial stress my Mom is under so she can focus on physical therapy and gaining mobility!
