Winston (click here for more photos), is a young English Setter that came to us from an over-crowded shelter in Eastern Tennessee October 10th. He was found as a stray not long after the remnants of Hurricane Helene blew through. We were lucky to fly him in with the help of Pilot Joseph and he following week he went for his initial vetting appointment.
Sadly he tested positive for heartworms and upon arrival to foster care in Illinois, we discovered he had a chest infection besides tick borne diseases Lyme and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. He was also struggling with an intestinal protozoa infection. Poor Winny, he was such a sick camper. I also found some bird shot pellets in his skin under his belly. Not sure if that was accidental or intentional, but it does not seem to bother him. I'll have the one I can feel removed when he is neutered.
It will be months before he is clear of the heartworms, but he seems to be feeling a lot better with the antibiotics for the tick borne diseases and possible pneumonia. To care for a dog with so many health problems, costs hundreds of dollars. At Illinois Birddog Rescue, we only do a slow-kill approach to he heartworms especially when there are so many other health concerns. Winston is the 3rd English Setter in a row that has come into our program with heartworms and tick borne disease.
We would love you support if you can help with his medical bills which are already over $700. He is the NICEST Setter, so sweet and loving in spite of everything he has gone through.
