support the SAPPHIC PASSION -Sapphonix Collective
Support us making the Sapphic Passion the best it can be! If 400 people donate $25, we will meet our goal. This fundraiser will run from March 5-19, so donate now!
Why we need your help:
- We have received generous funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, but it only makes up half of our requested budget.
- It’s super important to us to pay all of our artists fairly and equitably, honouring all the work they’ve put in, but currently they aren’t being compensated at the level that they deserve!
- We want to hire audio engineers so we can make a high-quality recording of this momentous evening.
- As the organizers, we are currently not paying ourselves anything, so we can make sure our collaborating artists get paid as much as possible. We’ve both taken an extremely active role in every aspect of this, from dreaming it up, to composing, writing the libretto, organizing rehearsals, behind the scenes admin work, and so much more! To fight burnout and ensure future Sapphonix events, we want to be able make this more sustainable for ourselves.
What is the Sapphic Passion:
- A live performance on April 5th, 7:30pm, at Sacre-Coeur Church, Montreal, 1471 Ontario Street E.
- A story of sapphic love, told through music and art!
- A repurposing of the “passion oratorio”, a historically Christian form used to tell a story of loss and redemption through music - but instead of the traditional Biblical texts, we used the fragmented poetry of Sappho blended with original text by Maria Gajraj to inspire a storyline of loss and redemption by and for the gays.
- 2 organists (Maria and Esther-Ruth), 3 choirs (Choeur Maha, Choeur Adleisia, and One Equall Musicke), 1 string quartet (Lyra quartet), 6 composers (Anna Berg, Morgan-Paige Melbourne, Leo Purich, Kim Farris-Manning, Sarah Rossy, Esther-Ruth Teel), 4 vocal soloists (Queen Hezumuryango, Patricia Yates, Jingjing Zu, Kathryn Riopel), 4 dancers (including Noël Vézina, Camille Scully, and Kai Fitzpatrick), 2 costume makers (Kimberly Lynch and Emily Parsons), and one drag makeup artist (Kim Farris-Manning).
Why the Sapphic Passion is important:
- Art is activism! Queer, Trans, and Sapphic people’s rights are currently being undermined and questioned in a way that they haven’t been for several decades.
- A celebration of sapphic joy and love that also leaves space for grieving is more important now than ever.
- This event supports over a hundred local artists, many of whom identify as Queer, Trans, Sapphic or BIPOC.
- The stories we tell shape who we are - and we need a gloriously over-the-top story of sapphic longing, love, loss and redemption told through music, dance, costume, and poetry!
