My name is Sabita Thakali, and never in my life did I imagine that I’d be fighting for the health of my own brother.
Mukunda Thakali, my 28-year-old brother, is a graduate student at Cumberland University. His life changed drastically on March 13th, when he was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s Disease), a rare autoimmune condition that has caused complete kidney failure. Now, he is in End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), and he needs dialysis three times a week just to survive.
But dialysis is not a cure. It’s simply keeping him alive for now. His only chance for a full and healthy life is a kidney transplant.
Why We Need Your Help
As a nurse, I’ve seen countless patients struggle with life-threatening illnesses, but nothing prepared me for the heartbreak of watching my own brother fight for his life. He is not just my brother. He’s my best friend, my inspiration, and my greatest support system. Since his diagnosis, every day has been a fight; not just against the disease, but also against the immense financial burden that comes with it.
As an international student, he has limited health insurance, and the costs of dialysis, hospital stays, and the transplant are beyond our ability to afford on our own. It’s heartbreaking to watch my brother fight not only against his disease but also against the financial burden of the treatment he so desperately needs.
How You Can Make a Difference
I’m advocating for my brother because I believe in the power of community, compassion, and generosity. He has so much life ahead of him, and with your help, he can live it.
Donate – Every contribution, no matter how small, will go directly toward covering his medical expenses.
Share – If you are unable to donate, sharing his story can bring us closer to the help he urgently needs.
Spread Awareness – The more people who hear his story, the higher his chances of receiving the life-saving assistance he needs.
My brother is still fighting, and I refuse to give up on him. But I can’t do this alone. From the bottom of my heart, I am asking for your help. Together, we can give my brother the future he deserves.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support.
