Although it is very hard to open up about the things me and my kids have been experiencing. I don’t know what else to do.
- May 20th we came home and climb in bed to find a bat flying around my room. I jumped to to protect and my kids and tried to get it out the door. As we were remaining cautious trying to stay away from them. We didn’t see it anymore so we assumed it had flew out. We were wrong.
- the very next night as my daughters walking to get a drink a bat chased her. We was able to get her to safety before being bit . And again opened the door trying to encourage it to go out.
This happeneddd 2 more nights in a row and we finally learned they were going up the chimney and staying there during the day to only come out at night. So we blocked the fireplace. On Tuesday May 20th I contact the landlord and put a maintenance request in for these issues. May 21st maintenance came out and looked in the attic he said woah you got a couple in there… NEVER CHECKED THE CHIMNEY. Said he doesn’t get paid enough he is not doing it. Stated th e bats have access to the whole house through the chimney so the basement was also dangerous as well. May 22nd they repaired a whole in the basement but no word on bats. May 23rd haven’t heard from them. Roll into the weekend. Monday was a holiday. Requested an update of what we’re were doing on Monday 26th. Finally get an answer form the property management on Tuesday May 27th acting as if this is no big deal. Because they weren’t in our “living space” mind you we are in danger in the basement and the fireplace had to be covered in order to protect us there as well. I have 8 children and all were living with me at the time. 5 with asthma and 2 with seizures. One who’s is medically complex and does not get shots. So this is a big deal with the scare of rabies. However the landlord doesn’t feel that way. They said the order had got “cancelled” and they had to put another one in. Of course they couldn’t explain why it was cancelled. They contacted A wildlife person to come evaluate the home. On Thursday May 29th they came and said there was “ALOT” of bats and inches and inches of bat droppings in the attic. They explained this can be dangerous to any human a breathing it in over a period of time and can cause respiratory issues. I spoke to the landlord about this situation and she was in complete denial stating that they was not told that and they are getting another opinion due to the $10k quote they gave them they thought was too high. I singly asked them to put us into another property in the mean time this business has over 400 properties and plenty open that we could stay in. Or even a hotel however they refused.
- Fast forward to yesterday. I started having health issues trouble breathing and pain in my chest. Went to the ER and they advise me they do believe this is a situation caused by the exposed bats. I was order to start rabies vaccinations to be cautious until speaking with the health department because the survival rate is 0. I was also advised all 8 of my children will have to be vaccinated.
- today speaking with the health department they advised the older children WILL NOT need the shots because of not being bitten or direct contact HOWEVER because the babies are younger and more at risk they do have to do them. The rabies vaccines are a series of 10 shots in 4 different settings within 14 days Breaks my heart for my babies. Not only that but my oldest of age 9 is not vaccinated because his body absorbs the disease and not the antidote so therefore it attacks his respiratory system system and shuts it down. So we are waiting in an infectious disease doctor to advise what would be best for him.
There is another company coming today June 2nd to evaluate the home. I have advised the landlord with all updates and she has still yet to care. Nor try to help us in this situation. I have renters insurance but this so an incident that falls on the landlord so even they won’t help. Speaking with the Indiana Department of health lead specialist rabies epidemiologst. He advised my home is inhabitable as I have been saying for over a week now and me and my children need to evacuate. So I am writing for help. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a hard worker and a good provider but homes are expensive and I don’t have enough to just jump up and move. Any dollar amount is appreciated or just a simple prayer. I am reaching out to see what programs help but from my understanding this is considered an isolated event that solely falls on the landlord so there is no help. Me and the kids will have to stay in a hotel until we find better placement and we all know how expensive that can be. I am seeking legal advice for this but as everyone knows that’s not a fast process either. If you could help i appreciate it if not i appreciate you taking the time to read this.
