<div>My name is Troy and this is my sweet, little, angel, baby, pig, Dani. Shortly after her 2nd birthday, she started being reluctant to eat her food. It was a freshly opened bag and she seemed more interested in the food I was getting for the other dogs, so I just assumed it was that bag of food and I would change it when it was out. I started to notice her losing weight, and about a week ago, she would breathe strangely when she laid in certain positions. She already had a scheduled vet appointment later that week so I was just keeping an eye on her and waiting it out. But, the day before her appointment she was struggling to breathe, and could barely keep her eyes open. I rushed her to the vet where they diagnosed a fever and performed x-rays. I’ll never forget the vet’s face when she came in and said “this is not good.” There was so much fluid on her lungs that you couldn’t see her actual lungs, or her heart (from any angle). She was basically being suffocated by the fluid building up in her chest cavity. We were sent to an emergency vet to see a cardiologist, where almost a half liter of fluid was extracted from her chest cavity. The doctor recommended a CT scan and most likely a rather invasive surgery to remove any remaining fluid and whatever was causing the infection. They wanted to keep her over the weekend in preparation for surgery the following week, but I already knew I was going to have to finance everything in order for her to get the care she needed, so I was saving money however I could. So they sent her home with some antibiotics and we kept a close eye on her. On Monday they removed another half liter of fluid from her chest and performed the CT where they found abscesses on two of her lung lobes. Tuesday was surgery, where they opened up her sternum, removed the two affected lung lobes, and the membrane that separates the lungs due to scarring. They placed chest tubes to keep draining fluid and kept her until Friday evening in order to monitor fluid production until it slowed enough for her to come home. From start to finish, this all ended up costing me just over $10,000. Which would have been much higher if not for the heart of the woman working in billing/financing. I knew from the moment I heard “emergency vet” that I was going to be using a credit card. Then when I heard “surgery,” I started picking up the financing plan pamphlets. I’m blessed to have a decent credit score (at least until this happened), but the reality of the situation is that I can’t afford the payments. I’m not one to ask for help unless I absolutely need it. And I absolutely need it in this case. I couldn’t afford to lose her, but I also can’t afford what it cost to keep her with me.
