Hi, my name is Paul and I am fundraising on behalf of colleague and friend PC Alan Smith. As many of you may be aware, Alan was involved in a serious traffic collision on the evening of Monday 16th December 2024, whilst off duty. Thankfully due to the excellent work of paramedics, he was stabilised and taken to the Resus Ward at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, where he was diagnosed as having sustained a serious head injury, resulting in swelling on the brain along with a spinal fracture. He has since been moved to the Acute Medical Unit where he remains under constant care.
His distraught wife, Bev, who resides in France, got an emergency flight to the UK and has spent most hours since at Alan’s bedside, eating every meal from a carrier bag. For the few hours of respite she does get, she has to find a nearby hotel, which is not easy due to the cost and availability around the Christmas period. Having now spent nearly a week finding hotels night by night, Bev has been informed by NHS staff that even though Alan’s condition is thankfully improving, they will be unable to travel home for at least 2 weeks.
Right now Bev is not only having to deal with the excruciating worry over Alan’s health, but also stressing over how much longer her finances are going to sustain this situation, another 2 weeks in hotels comes at a considerable cost.
Unfortunately Alan was not a member of the Federation, Welfare Fund or any insurance schemes.
Here comes my plea. As friends and colleagues of Al, you all know what type of fella he is. Always smiling, happy to help anyone, selfless, kind and absolutely a ‘gentle giant’. I visited the hospital on Tuesday and it was extremely distressing to not only see him in pain, but to see his wife in such a state of worry. Although we can’t take the worry of Al’s health away, we can certainly help towards the financial strain.
What I am asking is for you to donate money to support Al and Bev through this extremely difficult time at Christmas. Help would be hugely appreciated by not only myself, but Alan and Bev (knowing Alan like I do, he’ll be desperately trying to pay you back once he’s back on his feet). Bev is also too nice to accept help, hence why I have done this!
Money is tight for a lot of us during the festive period but any amount, no matter how small, will go a long way!
Thank you very much for your time and support.
PS: once he recovers I’ll be the first person to put a pen in his hand and make sure he signs up to the Fed!
