Hi, my name is Lucas. About a year ago, Percy basically showed up on my doorstep, dragging a leash, wearing a harness and a collar. Unfortunately, he had no identification on his collar and none associated with his chip.
We contacted all of the local pet finder organizations and uploaded his picture and info to all of shelters in case his family came there looking for him. After much research and talking to Lakewood Animal Control ( who knew him and one of his past owners), here is what we learned: Percy was "rehomed" on Facebook by his original owner when he was about 2 yrs. old. That owner "rehomed" him on Facebook again about 2 yrs. later. The last "rehoming" happened only about 10 days before he was found walking down the street, dragging his leash. His most recent owner no longer wanted him. (We also learned that his name had always been Percy).
My two elderly dogs had both passed away about a year prior to this, and about 6 or 7 months after that, I had been ready to venture into my next doggie dadhood. I then adopted Carlos from Foothills Shelter. Carlos is a sweet and very active husky mix, who would take off running at every opportunity. I had some work to do with him, training and building trust. I knew I wanted to eventually get a second dog, but I wasn't feeling ready yet.
Carlos and I were still getting to know each other, building our relationship and creating our new routines when Percy came into our lives.
Two or three weeks after Percy's arrival, I came home from work one day, and Percy greeted me with a big tooth filled smile! He also makes very unusual chirping noises when he is excited! He was so happy to see me, and I knew at that moment that I could not put him through what he had already been through several times in his life. I made a commitment to him that day that I would love and take care of him until the end of his life.
Percy was quite overweight and had difficulty walking long distances. After a couple of vet visits to update his vaccines and get bloodwork to check his thyroid and blood sugar, everything came back normal. My hope was that after having a healthy diet and regular exercise for an extended period of time, he would lose some weight and increase his endurance. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. As time went by, he seemed to have even less endurance, was actually gaining more weight, and then we began to notice that he would favor one back leg or the other when walking. If you watched him walk from the back, his legs were bent in an odd shape.
We went back to the vet most recently for xrays of his hips and legs. This is when we learned that he has torn ACL's in both back legs ☹️. Percy needs two TPLO surgeries. These will cost $3500 per knee, which is the least amount possible.
I just need help raising this much money, so I can get Percy back on his feet and on the road to health. Naturally, I plan to incur as much of this myself, as I possibly can. We will get his surgeries done, one way or another.
(We certainly do wonder if this is why Percy has been abandoned multiple times.)
Thank you for helping in any way possible, even if it's just to send well wishes!!!
