<div>Growing up, my mom was always there for every occasion I can (and can’t) remember. She is a hardworking, loving, and intelligent woman who has always made my life full of joy. That is why it pains me to see my mom go through this challenging time, and since January 2024 we have been battling against a rare form of Leukemia. AML/MDS hybrid leukemia is a type of blood cancer that combines features of both acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). It is a rare and complex disease, characterized by the presence of both AML and MDS cells in the bone marrow. As of 7/13/24 she is back in the hospital due to recent complications.

<div>Starting back in November 2023, my mother Danielle Nieto started having flu-like symptoms that continued to get worse. She toughed it out thinking it was merely a bug of some sort, but the development of a cyst began to worry her and my father. They wound up heading to the ER and confirmed it was an infection, which she was given strong antibiotics to help fight it. After 3 days they were out, however the flu-like symptoms only continued to worsen. Within the next 1-2 weeks she could no longer get out of bed. Soon after, she developed multiple blood clots in her right leg causing them to rush to the ER again. Knowing how much my mom dislikes going to hospitals, we as a family could tell this was much more serious than we initially thought. Tests were done, bearing good and bad news. The good news was the blood clot was not moving, however she was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia (MDS/AML with P53 mutation). From that point she was transferred to St. Luke’s to treat the Leukemia, but she soon began to take a drastic downward turn.

<div>Complications began with her lungs, causing her to get a bad case of pneumonia and rushed to the ICU whom confirmed there was fluid buildup in her lungs. She almost lost her life during this complication which lasted months. Multiple procedures were done to remove the liquid and allow her to breathe freely. She was no longer able to walk due to severe swelling and pain in her leg, at this point her leg was double the size and hurt from her hip to her foot. She soon began having more difficulty breathing, causing one more procedure to be done. Unexpectedly she was placed on a breathing tube, causing lots of stress and trauma on my mom. By 2 and a half months later we were starting to see some improvement and were finally able to speak about beginning chemotherapy! By this point she lost 60lb due to her not eating nearly enough with all of the hardships she was having to deal with.

<div>She soon went home in a wheelchair with my father Abraham Nieto as her primary caregiver but after 6 days of being at home, she was rushed to the emergency once more for another complication brought on by long usage of heavy pain medications. She was hospitalized once more for a couple of weeks then released again to go home. She recently gained back the ability to walk on her own without any sort of walking device, and is doing everything in her power to recover and stay active even through chemo (the picture above was her first time making it down the stairs on her own!). As of 7/13/24 she has had to go back to the hospital, and we’re currently waiting to get cleared for a current infection on her arm and leg before starting the 4th round of chemo. As her son I will be the donor, but we are currently having issues with insurance covering the procedure/treatment. Ongoing discussions with insurance will continue.

<div><strong>Why are we raising money?</strong>
</div>
<div>The insurance that my mother is on will not cover the Stem Cell Transplant locally, causing us to figure out if we need to change insurance completely or plan for 2-3 months of outpatient stay where we will need to cover the lodging fee. These times have also been very hard on my parents due to my mom not working since 12/23, and my dad helping care for my mom for the multiple months she was in the hospital. He is also her primary caregiver making it very hard for him to balance working and give as much as he can for my mom.

<div><strong>Where is the money going?</strong>
</div>
<div>Any donations received will be going directly to my dad's bank account, he has been in contact with insurance and paid all of the medical bills through this process. Specifically these donations will be helping us pay for any medications not covered by insurance, potentially months of lodging outside of our city due to insurance, and any other unforeseen expenses that may arise.
