Sheets, Derek Michael, 36, passed unexpectedly Friday, December 22, 2017. He was born on October 30, 1981 in Tempe, Arizona where his lifelong journey of challenges began with Spina Bifida. He was a man of few words, but taught our family what it means to have courage in the face of adversity. He lived a full life surrounded by his family and friends. Derek could melt your heart with his smile, contagious laugh, and gentle spirit. Our lives are forever changed, our hearts are broken, but we will stand tall and face our future without our beacon because that is what Derek taught our family.
Derek attended Kyrene del Norte and Kyrene Middle School and was a proud graduate of Marcos de Niza High School. He was active in student council and passionately involved with the baseball and football teams, keeping score and announcing. He then went to work for our family business, Spartan Concrete. Derek enjoyed fishing, going out to eat, attending country music concerts, going to the movies, and watching Arizona sports teams (especially ASU football where he never missed a game).
He is survived by parents, Mark and Chris Sheets; brother, Matt Sheets; nieces, Jenna, Mia and Bekah; sister and brother-in-law, Brianne and Mario Hurtado-Sheets; nephew, Xavier; Grandmother, Martha Slater; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on January 4, 2018 from 5:30pm - 8:30:pm in the Showcase Room at the Culinary Dropout. 149 S. Farmer Ave. Tempe, AZ 85281. In true Derek spirit, attire is any Arizona sport team apparel.
The donated funds will go to a cause near and dear to Derek's spirit - Spina Bifida Association of Arizona. Please help and donate - every dollar counts!
