Don Deane needs OUR Help

Donation protected
Our dear friend Don Deane underwent brain surgery in April of this year.  The condition that Don has is called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (liquid and pressure on the brain) and will affect him for the rest of his life.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

A shunt has been inserted into his brain to help with relieving the pressure of the liquid -- but it is likely that Don will need to have the shunt replaced as time goes on.  He also has cataracts that are inoperable at risk of losing all of his vision.   A Special Needs Trust is being established so that moneys raised for Don that can be put in this trust do not present a tax burden to him.

Prior to his surgery, Don's personal condition had been deteriorating on a variety of levels.   He has lost most of his money and no longer owns a business or a home.  The reasons are unclear and are possibly due to the medical conditions that he has been experiencing.   Don is presently staying in a Board and Care home in Sonoma County, as he recovers, now three months after his surgery.  Don's only income is the Social Security that he gets each month, which barely covers his expenses.

Before the medical procedure, Don appointed one of his former foster daughters,  Lena Furlong, to act as his Power-of-Attorney.  Lena is responsible for all of Don's finances and legal decisions.   The funds generated by this GoFundMe are going directly to Don's checking account that is being administer by Lena Furlong.  The funds will later be moved to the Special Needs Trust, when it is fully created.  Meanwhile, the donations will safely remain in Don's account at Redwood Credit Union, and administered by Lena Furlong.

Don was a part of the Bolinas community and West Marin for many decades before retiring from Smileys and buying a campground in the Sierra foothills.  In Bolinas, Don published the Coastal Post newspaper, owned and operated Smiley's Saloon, and was the foster and adoptive parent to more than 100 girls and boys in the community over the course of three decades. He was elected to public office and volunteered on many committees.   Don has made a difference in literally hundreds of lives, all for the better.

Your donations to the GoFundMe for Don Deane will help Don in finding a stable place to live and to facilitate expenses in the future that Medicare may not cover.
