Friends,
I am sharing with you the story of the Private English Club, a nonprofit organization that teaches children and adults English skills in the Dominican Republic, founded by my friend, Juan de Dios, whose name quite aptly translates to John of God in English. Juan de Dios is pictured on the far left of the cover photo.
The ability to speak, read, and write English is vital for educational and job advancement opportunities in the Dominican hospitality-based economy. Juan de Dios was able to rise out of Cristo Rey, an inner-city neighborhood in Santo Domingo, with his outstanding English skills, drive to succeed, and belief in education. He was a favorite employee in the hotel where I have spent 5-6 weeks per year working with students at the opposite end of the Dominican social strata on college and graduate school applications to United States' schools with my partner Elizabeth at Ivy College Counseling in Santo Domingo. Everyone was drawn to Juan de Dios' fantastic sense of humor, charisma, and facility with English, which he honed by watching every episode of the popular television series, "Friends." He left a promising career in the hospitality industry to pursue his entrepreneurial dream to launch a school to teach English to other Dominicans in Cristo Rey.
Juan de Dios is changing lives at Private English Club. I hope that you will join me in supporting my efforts to raise funds for Private English Club to assist in the purchase of a projector, printer and some computers.
Thank you,
Leslie Drew
