Dominica Social Change Trip

Donation protected
Last year, I went on a trip to a small island in the West Indies named Dominica. Although it’s not very well known, it is beautiful.
I went on this trip with a local organization called UKSD, who dedicate themselves to changing the world and helping the community, all through soccer. It is run by two of my soccer coaches Lee Docherty and Meghan Fligg. This trip to Dominica is one of their Social Change trips that they do all over the world, from this island, to the Middle East and to Africa.
While we were in Dominica, we experienced a different side of life that many live on a daily basis. Our group visited schools and brought supplies for their education. We brought cleats, shin guards, bags, socks, and clothes to a local village named Pointe Michel where we met some of the coolest kids.
Luckily, the next day we spent all day at the beach, playing soccer, hanging out, and getting to know these kids. One day, we went to a home for the elderly and disabled. At first,
coming into these peoples homes was uncomfortable, but as Doc always tells us “You must step out of your comfort zone. It’s a part of growing up.” We got to help out with laundry and cleaning, but the most important part was getting to connect with these people. We met many adults there that we sang with, recited poetry to, and just discussed our lives with.
When we got some time to ourselves, we enjoyed hiking through the beautiful rainforest and swimming in the waterfalls. At night, we always walked down to the beach to take a swim at sunset and reflect on the crazy day we just had.
Last April, I had an experience like no other. I’ve never been as happy as I was on this island with these people. After getting hit with Hurricane Maria, they weren’t left with much, but the absolute joy and happiness the people of Dominica share is something like you’ve never seen before. I hope to go back to Dominica in April 2020 to reunite with the special friends I made there, like Havis, the coolest apartment renting, van-driving, tour guide you could ever find.

Thank you for reading about my experience in Dominica. If you wish to donate, every dollar is appreciated to help me reach my goal!!
