Meet Dixie. Dixie is a 3-year-old registered Redbone coonhound. She is a show champion, and a raccoon-hunting fool. Her idea of the perfect day is chasing squirrels all afternoon, and raccoons all night. She loves sleeping on the couch, and sticking her cold nose in my face to wake me up in the morning.

One day in Mid-July, I noticed her mouth was swollen. I opened her mouth and found a stick wedged into the roof of her mouth. It appeared to have been there for at least several days as it was swollen and infected. I pulled the stick out after a bit of a struggle. I had to leave town the next day but my husband Pete took her to the vet for antibiotics. When I came home a week later her mouth was just as swollen. The antibiotics weren't working. I was going to take her back to the vet a couple of days later on my day off, but then, once the antibiotics were already gone, the swelling started to go down. It went completely away and I thought the issue was over.

Until it came back 2 weeks later. For the past 5 months, Dixie has been to countless veterinarian appointments. She has been seen by two different vets. I have spoken to several other vets I know. None of them can figure out what is causing this.

She has had X-rays, blood work, a biopsy and 2 exploratory surgeries. She has had 4 different kinds of antibiotics. She is on Prednisone, which reduces the swelling but does not make it go completely away. I have already spent around $1500 trying to determine what is causing this.

Both vets recommend that the only thing left to do, other than putting her down, is to take her to the Mississippi State Veterinary School. She has an appointment for 11 am on January 25th. The cost to do the necessary tests has been estimated at $2-3000. This is only to determine what is causing the issue and does NOT include the cost of treatment.

Anyone who knows me knows that I hate asking anyone for anything. If it was for me, and not Dixie, I wouldn't be asking. I do have some money in savings and it will all be spent on this but my fear is that I still won't have enough money. Any money raised on this will go directly to vet bills. If, by some miracle this campaign were to take off and raise more money than is needed, any extra will either go to another dog in need, or to the local pet shelter.

So please, if you have a few extra dollars to spare, consider sending them to Dixie. Let's help her get back to chasing critters and enjoying her favorite time of year.
