A hosted Documentary Series on The History of Christian Rock
What started as a new way to get kids to come to Church, Christian rock spread like wildfire and quickly found its way into every genre in the Rock and Roll universe. With a stigma worse than Nickelback, Christian music first struck a chord in American culture and quickly became a billion dollar business worldwide.
My name is Michael Bridges and I love music. I love the experience of music for fans and artists and the not so subtle give and take of that relationship. I love the culture of music. I love bringing people together to share life’s stories and creating places to be who you are. I love being part of a local music scene, a group of friends with a common thread, a family.
I was an “all in” Christian youth group kid raised in a slightly more liberal American Christian household at the height of the ‘Satanic Panic’ period where I became a voracious Christian music superfan. Backward masking and parental advisory stickers fueled a desire in me to be in a kick ass Christian rock band to fight Satanic forces with music!
Like many growing up in a religious subculture, I was compelled to substitute “evil” and “worldly” secular music with any Christian music I could find. Personally, I spent 25 years as a sort of Christian rock missionary, building my own Christian rock world. As a musician I was in 4 Christian rock bands that made 8 records, a few Christian rock radio hits and several cross country tours. As a promoter I created 6 live Christian music venues in 2 states, 18 Christian music festivals in 4 states and saw an army of Christian bands and artists go through my gates.
Though my own life journey has led me to different religious beliefs, I have nothing but love for the experiences I had and the long list of eccentric characters I am thankful to call my friends. The relationships I made over the years have given me an empathetic view and the fortunate position to be able to interview artists and musicians from across the entire timeline of Christian rock. I want to take you to hear their stories, see their lives and how they are connected. I hope you’ll come with me as I go back and explore The History of Christian Rock.
Blood Sweat and Sin
The History of Christian Rock
In similar fashion to the documentary series Hip Hop Evolution, Sonic Highways or anything Bourdain, Blood, Sweat and Sin is a Documentary tv series about the History of Christian rock. Each episode has 3 segments where I will interview bands and artists across the timeline of Christian rock in their everyday lives and on stage. The series will also include “talking heads”, stars and historians of the culture, that will comment on each segment.
Your contribution will go directly to producing a 2 episode pilot of the series and a final edit on the Sizzle (Trailer) seen here. The funded production will include a stripped down crew for writing, locations, logistics, cameras, sound, music, PA and editing. We will shoot this locally here in Los Angeles but have been gifted travel, room and board to shoot in the NW if we can put it together financially. If we can, we will shoot in Seattle and Portland as well.
Normally a show like this would be far more financially to shoot professionally. There would probably be a huge crowdfunding campaign with it. We are going to do it the way we used to do everything else we did. DIY. We need your help. It’s just a couple of us trying to make this happen. If you have come to one of my shows or festivals, if you've seen one of my bands play I ask you to help. If you connect with a Christian band in your past, please help. Those involved so far have taken pay cuts or donated their time outright to see this project happen. With your help our intention is to keep producing episodes as we can afford it and to continue to shop the project to production companies and streaming services in the hopes that it gets picked up and broadcast.
Covid restrictions. We will be adhering to all coronavirus restrictions in respect to safety and guidelines of production in California.
I understand that in the grand scheme of things this is not anything essential. No problems are getting solved here. There are far more important matters of justice and human lives at stake in the world. A lot of us have lost jobs and businesses. This is simply a rest. A breather from the anxiety we all share right now. A fun look back at a very complex and fascinating culture. One that has made an impact on more than just the music world. I hope that you will join me in making it happen! I want to thank you for watching and reading. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me. I hope you and yours are all healthy and safe. Cheers from Southern California!
