Documentary About Father Flanagan

Tax deductible
Through numerous interviews and creative archival footage sourcing, the film will detail in a compelling manner how Fr. Flanagan transformed a hardened culture and a harsh juvenile justice system toward grace and mercy for disadvantaged youth. We will also highlight his tremendous moral courage in:

-defying death threats, ridicule and standing up to the Ku Klux Klan
-his role in liberating Nisei Japanese families from U.S. Internment Camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor
-and delve into the 1946 Ireland Controversy whereby Fr. Flanagan boldly condemned an abusive and wayward system of care for institutionalized children

We believe the true story of this priest, who stood up for disadvantaged young people in the midst of a society that wanted to punish them like hardened adult criminals without hope for the dignity to grow into productive adult citizens, needs to be told.  He was unafraid to speak truth to power which serves as an antidote to the loss of respect for the priesthood which is among the consequences of the current clergy abuse scandals.  In his lifetime he directly called out religious and government run youth care institutions that were abusing vulnerable children.

Furthermore we can also explore the resonance between Pope Francis' call for a Church that "goes to the peripheries" and Fr. Flanagan's worldwide efforts to protect marginalized youth at risk. The renewed call for a "Merciful" church is also revealed by exploring Flanagan's serving as the face of a nation's hope and mercy to Austria, Germany, Korea, Japan & Philippines after WWII.

We will document his lasting legacy and impact:

   - inspired more than 80 youth care programs around the world that are based on his youth care philosophies.
-the permanent improvement in how children are cared for and raised
-the countless lives transformed by his highly developed system of care
-and the ripple effects of these individuals who are now raising families of their own and contributing positively to society.

Through the testimonials we will secure in numerous interviews the film's conclusion will highlight how Fr. Flanagan bore witness to the Catholic faith in his life and demonstrated heroic virtue by overcoming numerous challenges in his effort to build the Kingdom of God.
