We believe the true story of this priest, who stood up for disadvantaged young people in the midst of a society that wanted to punish them like hardened adult criminals without hope for the dignity to grow into productive adult citizens, needs to be told. He was unafraid to speak truth to power which serves as an antidote to the loss of respect for the priesthood which is among the consequences of the current clergy abuse scandals. In his lifetime he directly called out religious and government run youth care institutions that were abusing vulnerable children.
Furthermore we can also explore the resonance between Pope Francis' call for a Church that "goes to the peripheries" and Fr. Flanagan's worldwide efforts to protect marginalized youth at risk.
