COTEDIH, organizzazione di Haiti con alle spalle più di 30 anni di attività, dal 2005 è presente in varie aree rurali isolate del paese con programmi di educazione, sviluppo dell’agricoltura, supporto alle famiglie delle vittime delle devastazioni naturali e microfinanza rivolto ai piccoli commercianti.
Tra le tante sfide, la più grande che COTEDIH si trova a fronteggiare al momento è la ricostruzione urgente dell’unica scuola dell’area rurale di Doco in vista dell’inizio del nuovo anno accademico.
Haiti, primo paese di schiavi al mondo ad aver sconfitto i colonizzatori riuscendo così, nel 1804, a fondare la prima repubblica nera nella storia dell’umanità, è conosciuta però dai più per le sue tragiche fatalità. Il paese fu colpito nell'estate 2004 dall'uragano Jeanne, nel gennaio 2010 dal secondo terremoto più distruttivo della storia dell'uomo e nell'ottobre 2016 dall'Uragano Matthew. Tutto ciò, oltre all'instabilità politica che dalla dichiarazione di indipendenza ha accompagnato il nuovo stato fino ai giorni nostri, lo ha reso il paese più povero dell’emisfero occidentale, con l’80% della popolazione che vive al di sotto della soglia della povertà.
L’area di Doco dove si svolge il nostro intervento è situata nella parte sud-est del paese. Duramente colpita dal terremoto del 2010 e, in seguito, dal passaggio dell’uragano Matthew nel 2016, la zona si sviluppa come una estesa bidonville dove vivono oltre 60,000 abitanti senza ospedali, né biblioteche o negozi, e al momento anche nessuna scuola.
Di queste 60,000 persone, 36,000 sono giovani e tra questi il 70% bambini e ragazzi in età scolare che non sanno né leggere né scrivere e non frequentano alcuna istituzione educativa.
La missione che si propone COTEDIH è molto ambiziosa: il lancio di un programma mirato a migliorare le condizioni scolastiche di 500 studenti, formare 50 insegnanti e fornire corsi professionalizzanti pomeridiani per 200 giovani della comunità.
Per poter entrare in funzione, il programma richiederà molto tempo ed un ingente numero di fondi (intorno ai 200.000 euro), ma il primo passo da intraprendere è quello della ricostruzione immediata dell’infrastruttura per poter essere in grado almeno di cominciare con le classi primarie, dato che è già settembre e a breve dovrebbe iniziare il nuovo anno accademico.
Queste sono le condizioni della scuola a ridosso della riapertura dell’anno scolastico:

ma ora abbiamo bisogno di riempire le buche e riparare l’intelaiatura, lavori per i quali c’è bisogno di cemento, ferro, sabbia, roccia e ghiaia.
Per poter acquistare questi materiali, COTEDIH ha il bisogno urgente di conseguire un totale di 8.703,73 euro per sostenere le seguenti spese:
Grazie a questa somma, le mamme e i papà della comunità potranno con le loro mani finire di sistemare la scuola e permettere così ai loro figli di tornare quest’anno sui banchi.

COTEDIH is an organization that has existed in Haiti for more than 30 years and has run various rural development programs in the country since 2005 in the fields of Education and Training Agriculture, support of victims’ families, housing reconstruction for the poor and micro finance for small merchants.
Among the many challenges, at the moment COTEDIH has to face the urgent reconstruction of the only school in the rural area of Doco in preparation for the reopening of the of classes for the new academic year.
Haiti, the first country in which slaves overthrew the colonial power and founded the first black-led nation in the world, declaring its independence in 1804, is mostly known for its wretched destiny. The country was struck in the summer 2004 by the hurricane Jeanne, in January 2010 by the second most destructive earthquake in the history of the mankind and in October 2016 by the hurricane Matthew. All this, in addition to the political instability that have followed its independence to the present day, made Haiti the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Doco area where COTEDIH has planned its intervention is located in the south-east part of the country. Hard hit by the earthquake of 2010 and then by the hurricane Matthew in 2016, the area takes the form of a giant shantytown in which more than 60,000 people live with no hospital, no library and no market, and at the moment even no school.
Among these 60,000 people, 36,000 are youth and its 70% consists of children and young people who can neither read nor write and attend no school.
The goal of COTEDIH is really ambitious: the launch of a new program to improve the schooling conditions of about 500 pupils, train 50 teachers, regional directors and school committee members, as well as to provide vocational training to 200 young people.
To become effective, the program requires quite a long time and a considerable number of funds (around 200.000 euros), but the first step to undertake urgently is to rebuild the school infrastructure in order to be able at least to start with the primary classes since it’s September and the reopening of the new academic year is approaching.
Here is how the school looks like at the moment:

but now we have to fill the holes and fix the infrastructure, and for doing so we need iron, cements, rocks, gravel and sand.
For reaching our goal, COTEDIH urgently needs to collect an amount of 8.703,73 euros in order to afford the expenses for these materials:
Thanks to this amount of money, the parents of the community will be able to rehabilitate with their own hands the school and so to send their children to school this year.
