Getting started with English language lessons for Ukrainian guests in Mid Sussex

We’ve been honoured to be able to support a number of Ukrainian people fleeing the horror of war in their country. In Lindfield and the surrounding area there are a growing number of families arriving to settle with their hosts under the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme.

For many this is their first time in the UK and they have not studied English since they were at school. Language lessons are a must, not only to be able to actively engage and be included in all our local community has to offer, but also to be able to work and support their children. It is hard to imagine what arriving in a new country where you don’t speak the language feels like - overwhelming, exhausting and disempowering.

We have teamed up with Sussex Tutition Centre in Haywards Heath who are generously donating their space and skills, with their English teachers committing to give an hour of free teaching to a small group each week. But our guests need intensive teaching to get them started so we are hoping to fund an additional 15 hours of teaching a week for three groups initially- beginners, intermediate and a children’s group.

To do this we need to raise £4,500 in total for the three 8- week intensive courses.

Could you or your business sponsor a place?

£25 would cover the costs of the student text book

£30 would cover a student workbook

£50 would enable two children to have the resource books that they need

£250 would enable a Ukrainian friend to feel confident and able to navigate day to day language in the UK and enter employment.
