Wessex goes virtual!

How will the money be used: In summary - to meet the costs of recording projects, as we strive to maintain musical training and focus towards challenges and performance, whilst keeping our young musicians and our audiences socially distant and safe during these COVID times.

In more detail: The Centre for Wessex Young Musicians is a Saturday morning music centre, providing quality ensemble training for young musicians of all ages and stages. Through expert coaching, rehearsals and music-making, the Centre is actually providing a sociable, musical channel for our young members to develop vital life skills in:

•   concentration, communication, listening, memory, abstract reasoning, self-discipline, confidence, responsibility - the list goes on!

Music-making is also a huge destress-er and has long been acknowledged for its support of good mental health - a key component as we strive to support and guide young people as they prepare to take on the challenges of modern-day life, and in particular so important - following such upheaval as we have seen on young people’s lives, this year.

Until COVID19, the Centre’s work has always been based upon sociable, close proximity teamwork - via musical experiences and related concert appearances - activities that due to the current need for careful social distancing, for now, has had to temporarily cease. As a result, the CWYM and WYO have remained silent now for 6 months and we are super keen to be able to kick-start the “Wessex engine” again, and get that vital skill building and mental health enrichment back into gear. But since it seems likely that COVID19 will remain alongside us for some time to come - it is important that we find new ways to deliver our work.

Those new ways will include a significant amount of socially distanced multi-track recording work - bringing exciting new challenges and experiences for our youngsters, and focusing their attention on the pursuit of detail and accuracy, as well as opening their eyes to the professional world of studio recording work. Such projects will require extra funding - above and beyond the Centre’s normal outgoings, and it is for these projects in particular for which we will need to find enhanced funding.
