Dear Friends & Family,
As some of you may know I am entering my final semester (YAY!) of the Accelerated BSN Program at Rutgers University. I am excited to share with you an opportunity I have to participate in a medical mission with Foundation for Peace (foundationforpeace.org) as part of my Community Health clinical experience course requirements. Foundation for Peace is a non-profit organization that serves dozens of communities in The Dominican Republic, Haiti and Kenya in building schools, medical clinics, churches, and water purification facilities. I have the opportunity to work alongside Foundation for Peace and Rutgers School of Nursing in a Service Leadership Program with a health promotion project in the Dominican Republic.
This semester, nursing students, myself included, and faculty will be operating nurse-managed clinics in underserved areas of the Dominican Republic to improve health promotion and chronic disease management for this population. These clinics are often held in schools, churches, or other public buildings and will serve between 300 and 700 people a day. We will also have the opportunity to go out into these impoverished communities to make home health visits to those who cannot make it to the clinics. During our time there, we will be supplying the families we meet with basic health supplies, toiletries and basic sanitary needs, in addition to medicines specific to the needs of the community to prevent the continued prevalence of fungus and parasites. As we give the supplies we will be providing necessary health teaching to these families on topics like water safety, preventing the spread of disease, and other basic health topics.
The opportunity to take part in this trip would not only fufill a life long dream, but it would also allow me to work hand in hand with those in need in my country. In order to make this trip possible I'm asking for your support. The money raised will go toward airfare, housing, transportation, uniform, food, paper products and medical supplies for treatments as well as to create care packs and family medicine packs. To succeed in accomplishing our goals, we need to bring many healthcare supplies along with vitamins and medication to prevent paraites. We also pack women and men packs for individuals who are in need of basic hygiene items such as razors and feminine pads. Expectant mothers will recieve a three month's supply of prenatal vitamins; infants, children and adults will recieve one month supply. I would really appreciate your assistance in raising funds to purchase these critically important healthcare supplies. Any monetary donations would be greatly appreciated and can be made on this GoFundMe page, as a tax-deductible donation (Tax Id: 55-0810709).
