Marathon World Championships

Hi my name is Caroline Cook and I have been selected to represent Canada at the 2014 Canoe/Kayak Marathon World Championships on September 22-28 in Oklahoma City, USA. I will be competing in the Women's Under 23 class. Kayak racing is my life and I've been training for the last 10 years with the Balmy Beach Canoe Club. It is an honour to represent Canada.
My principal sport is "sprint kayak" in which I race 200m, 500m, and 1000m events and my ultimate goal is to compete at the Olympics. Marathon kayak is a little different; races are anywhere from 20-40km. I am going out of my comfort zone racing 22.5km at marathon worlds but I am really excited! My sprint coach Peter Martinek is a strong believer that long distance paddling improves our fitness for our short sprint races. We do 24-36km paddles every single Saturday in the Fall and Spring. The workouts are gruelling lasting 2-3 hours on the water. I can't do these practices without being mentally tough as well. My training also includes running, swimming, crossfit, weights and cross country skiing. This amounts to roughly 21 hours per week, so while I also attend university I have little time left for part-time jobs to support myself.
My sprint season finished this past week and I brought home 3 medals from Nationals. 2 Silvers and 1 Bronze. I am really happy with my success this summer and I hope to continue that success into the fall when I compete at Marathon Worlds.
I am also hard of hearing and my goal is to be a great role model to others like me. I want other people to know that they can't let a disability get in the way of their dreams. There will be many challenges along the way but I will not give up.
